Keep practice short and positive: about 5–10 minutes. Use this after the sounds and words have been taught. Stop and help when the child is stuck.
- Point to a known spelling. Ask for the sound. Model it if needed.
- Read three words from the word bank. Encourage looking at letters and blending sounds, rather than guessing from context.
- Read the passage together. Reread once for smoothness and discuss what happened.
- Cover the word bank. Say sat, pat, tap, one at a time. Ask the child to say the sounds, then write each word.
Sound model: Model /s/, short /a/, /t/ and /p/. Keep /s/ continuous and /t/ and /p/ short; avoid adding an ‘uh’. Slide the sounds together in sat.
Meaning answer: Sat down.
