Division with remainders

Sometimes a number doesn't share equally. 23 ÷ 5: the most fives that fit is four (4 × 5 = 20), and 3 are left over. We write this as 4 remainder 3, or '4 r 3'. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor — if it isn't, another group fits.

Sample questions

9 ÷ 2 = ? (give the remainder)

  1. 2 × 4 = 8, which is the most 2s that fit into 9.
  2. 9 − 8 = 1 left over.
  3. So 9 ÷ 2 = 4 r 1.

Answer: 4 r 1

14 ÷ 4 = ? (give the remainder)

  1. 4 × 3 = 12, which is the most 4s that fit into 14.
  2. 14 − 12 = 2 left over.
  3. So 14 ÷ 4 = 3 r 2.

Answer: 3 r 2

17 ÷ 3 = ? (give the remainder)

  1. 3 × 5 = 15, which is the most 3s that fit into 17.
  2. 17 − 15 = 2 left over.
  3. So 17 ÷ 3 = 5 r 2.

Answer: 5 r 2
