Tables of values

A table of values pairs each input with an output made by the same rule. Look at how much the outputs go up each time the input goes up by 1: that is the number to multiply by. Then check the first column to see if anything is added. Use the whole rule on any input, even one far along the table. To find an input from an output, undo the rule: take away, then divide.

Sample questions

The same rule turns every input into its output. What number goes in the empty box?

InputOutput152103154?525
  1. The outputs go up by 5 each time the input goes up by 1, so the rule starts with × 5.
  2. 1 × 5 = 5, which matches the output for 1. The rule is × 5.
  3. 4 × 5 = 20.

Answer: 20

The same rule turns every input into its output. What number goes in the empty box?

InputOutput122?3648510
  1. The outputs go up by 2 each time the input goes up by 1, so the rule starts with × 2.
  2. 1 × 2 = 2, which matches the output for 1. The rule is × 2.
  3. 2 × 2 = 4.

Answer: 4
